The updated guidance is aligned to the current statutory curriculum in place in Northern Ireland schools and takes account of changes in legislation relating to drugs since the previous guidance was published in 2004. The Department of Education is firmly committed to tackling the increasing problem of the availability and use of illegal drugs. If you or someone close to you is dealing with drug addiction, the weight of it can feel overwhelming.

It’s important to look out for signs that your child’s drinking or drug use is affecting their mental health or wellbeing. You can find a list of common warning signs further down this page. Try to do this even if your child or young person tells you something that worries you. Avoid getting angry, porno shouting, or telling them they’re ‘bad’ for drinking or trying drugs. If they’re worried that you will be cross, they might become secretive about what they’re doing.

• The majority of people aged 16 to 59 years who reported using any drug in the last year were infrequent users (70%), with almost half (49.4%) reporting they had only taken them “once or twice” (Figure 4).
• Misuse can involve being dependent on substances or taking them in a way that causes harm.
• The range of variability for these drugs will be quite large because of sampling variability so figures will be liable to fluctuation from year to year.
• It should also be recognised that levels of drug use are relatively low, and the use of some drugs, such as heroin, are particularly rare and only have a small number of users.
• You should always check with a doctor or an adult you trust before taking them.

In addition, CSEW estimates in this release should be interpreted with caution because of the shorter nine-month data collection period and lower survey response rates. Similarly, some tables typically published as part of this release have not been produced because of quality concerns or disclosure constraints. As a result of these possible limitations, the CSEW is likely to underestimate the level of drug misuse in England and Wales. Drug misuse in England and Wales Dataset

The Crime Survey for England and Wales only measures generic, rather than specific, NPS. Survey estimates in this release are based on the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). While this is the first comparable survey data with pre-coronavirus pandemic data from the year ending March 2020, they are not National Statistics and caution must be taken when using these data. In the licensee setting, applicants should take advice from both this department when their application is being processed, as well as the relevant police contact dealing with crime prevention matters. Companies and individuals are reminded that they are still bound by the requirements of relevant waste legislation and should take further advice from the relevant Government department on this. For this purpose, the authorised person may be an officer of Pharmaceutical Advice and Services at the Department. Records may also be required under the terms of a licence issued by the Department.

Part IIIU.K. Class C Drugs

Notably these groups include homeless people and those living in certain institutions, such as prisons. Broken down by drug type, those earning less than £10,400 per year were most likely to have used cannabis (13.2%). For more detailed figures on frequency of drug use, see Section 2 of the accompanying dataset. Data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) showed no change in the overall level of any drug use (see Glossary for definition) in the last year for the year ending June 2022 compared with the year ending March 2020. Some drugs can also slow you down or give you more energy which can make your blood sugar levels go high or low. For small amounts eg reference standards, testing laboratories etc a secure cabinet or small safe is sufficient, but commercial amounts need to be kept in safe custody stores such as prefabricated strong rooms.

Giving, selling or even sharing any controlled drug, such as an ecstasy tablet or cannabis, to or with a friend or anyone else is classed as supplying an illegal drug. Information about drugs, staying safe, penalties for drug offences and new psychoactive substances. Addiction is slightly different to dependence although the words are sometimes used interchangeably. If you are addicted to a drug, there is an excessive craving, and uncontrollable and compulsive use of that drug. People who are addicted still get cravings for drugs such as opioids even after they have reduced them slowly so that they are no longer dependent.

The truth is that addiction can cloud judgment and make it difficult to be honest with yourself. What starts as something social or experimental can gradually tighten its grip until you only notice once it is already controlling parts of your life. This is why it is important to pause and check in with yourself, even if it feels uncomfortable. A few honest answers can give you clarity on whether your relationship with drugs is heading into dangerous territory.
